Native to Southeast Asia and the western Pacific, the 'Apape is a large tree with white inflorescences and smooth, black fruits that are popular with birds. Along with the Pūrau, it should be one of the main trees in our valleys. It plays an important role in Tahitian legends. Tree of the god 'O'a, it was used to build Hiro's canoe, and is invoked at the creation of the world so that the child will have a thick epidermis.
