Native to Southeast Asia and the West Pacific, the 'Apape is a large tree with white inflorescences and smooth, black fruits appreciated by birds. It should be one of the main trees in our valleys, along with the Pūrau. It holds an important place in Tahitian legends. Tree of the god 'O'a, it was used to build Hiro's canoe, and was invoked during the creation of the world so that the child would have thick skin.
